If you're into podfic and femslash and you haven't already checked out KISSES Fest at [community profile] audiofemme, I highly recommend heading over there. Okay, so, as one of the mods I might be sort of biased about this, but...between the <5 minute A Peck on the Lips compilation and the >5 minute Makeout Sessions, there is a seriously excellent selection of f/f podfic at the comm.

I'm still working on my submission for Makeout Sessions (I know, I'm super late - I got seriously podblocked by the heat), but I did manage to finish 5 short podfics for A Peck on the Lips. I recommend listening to the entire compilation, but if you're interested, my contributions are listed below.

I just signed up for [livejournal.com profile] pod_together (and you should, too!), even though I'm kind of failing at life right now and falling behind practically every deadline anyone can set for me. But *ahem*, I swear I won't fail out of this!

God, that was a terrible introduction. Can I start over?

I just signed up for [livejournal.com profile] pod_together, and you should, too!

I had so much fun with it last year. I was originally assigned to a dyad (just me and the author), but when that didn't work out I was placed with [livejournal.com profile] cantarina1, [livejournal.com profile] weimar27, and [livejournal.com profile] moragmacpherson. I missed out on the creative collaboration part (I was replacing another podficcer who had to bow out), but we had an incredible time recording together. I pushed the limits of my comfort zone by reading a very animated (and occasionally French-speaking) 10th Doctor, and while weimar and I poked fun at ca'rina for her Canadian pronunciation of "laboratory," (she's totally right, though - there IS an 'o' in the middle) I mangled the Doctor's French and repeatedly mispronounced the word "console." No, seriously, this is an endorsement - when I mangle lines of text alone, it usually results in heavy sighing and cursing. Mangling lines of text with a group results in laughter and blooper reels. SO MUCH BETTER.

I put myself down as willing to work with a group this year, but I'm pretty much open for anything. I'm looking forward to doing more on the creative collaboration side, though. I have a better sense of what my strengths are and what kind of story I'd like to record this time. I have a really good feeling about [livejournal.com profile] pod_together 2012. It's going to be awesome

Oh my god you guys, [livejournal.com profile] manifesty made cover art for my podfic of The 80/20 Theory As  Applied to Cats on the Bed. You guys, it's beautiful. Just look at it.

[livejournal.com profile] manifesty does gorgeous work with cover art. The images zhe chooses and hir attention to light and color are amazing. I highly recommend looking through hir tumblr, Podfic Covers

I'm taking this excuse to repost this podfic with updated links (previously it was only available as an m4a - long, boring story that boils down to my general cluelessness). If you'd like this podfic in a more normal file format, and/or if you'd like a copy with some amazing cover art attached, the links are posted below!

"The mission of the Jim Collins Foundation is to provide financial assistance to transgender people for gender-confirming surgeries. The Jim Collins Foundation recognizes that not every transgender person needs or wants surgery to achieve a healthy transition. But for those who do, gender-confirming surgeries are an important step in their transition to being their true selves. However, access to gender-confirming surgery is impossible for most. Discrimination against transgender people is so prevalent that many transgender people struggle to survive, never mind save for surgery costs. Even for those who have health insurance, coverage is systematically denied. Many insurance policies contain a “Transsexual Exclusion Clause” which excludes all medical procedures related to a person’s transgender status. For many transgender people, access to surgery is out of reach.

The Jim Collins Foundation raises money to fund gender-confirming surgeries for those transgender people who need surgery to live a healthy life, but have no ability to pay for it themselves. We recognize that for those people who require surgery for a healthy gender transition, lack of access to surgery may result in hopelessness, depression, and sometimes, suicide. The Jim Collins Foundation is a community-based initiative promoting the self-determination and empowerment of all transgender people"

There are a lot of great offers up over there, including a handful of podfics. The podfic offering thread is here.

I'm offering a podfic of a fic up to 5,000 words, which I'm willing to split between as many as 3 fics. My offering is here!

Unrelated - did anyone else watch the series premiere of Awake? I thought it was in-fucking-credible. I'm really hoping it stays this high quality. It was gorgeous, and it broke my heart in all the right ways.

Okay, now I'm just procrastinating. I hope everyone on my flist is doing well, and that the weather has been gentle wherever you are.

I can't believe I keep forgetting to do this! Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] brynspikess for the lovely shiny v-gift!

I only have one class on Tuesdays, so I wanted to spend today avoiding my homework by recording the fic I chose for [community profile] chromatic_podfic. That's due March 2nd, and if I wait much longer it'll get crowded out by the 40 page paper that's due later that week. Which I haven't started writing yet. Which totally isn't my fault. Which I actually had to have a meeting about with people at my school, and they agreed it wasn't my fault. SO THERE.

*ahem* Anyway. IN ADDITION to an un-started 40 page paper, a short presentation, and two midterms in the next two weeks, I'm working on my [community profile] chromatic_podfic, a podfic for [livejournal.com profile] crinklysolution for [community profile] scarleteenfans, and my [livejournal.com profile] podficbigbang. In addition to three or four other podfics in various stages of planning and/or completion.

And! Hey! You can still win my podficcing services in support of Planned Parenthood at [community profile] fandom_helps! Bidding is open until 11:30 EST TONIGHT! And despite the dubious state of affairs described in the last paragraph, I actually have a pretty fast turnaround time on podfics won in charity auctions. Two weeks to a month, usually. (Just, um, not the next two weeks. Probably.)

I also still have a podfic up for auction at [community profile] fund_jcollins. That auction closes on March 7th.

Also, I talked about The Walking Dead in my last post, and then watched the most recent episode...I really can't endorse that show. It has such an incredible look to it, but the content is pretty fucking misogynistic. And not in an intelligent, meta-textual, commenting-on-human-nature kind of way. It's not that humanity collapses and the survivors revert to base primate behavior...it's just dumb. The amount of time I can forestall disappointment in a bad show is directly proportional to how excited I was about it before it aired, and The Walking Dead finally crossed that line for me. It's been too dumb for too long.

Oh hey, I realized I started a thought like five paragraphs ago and never finished it. I was going to record podfic today. But instead I'm drinking hot tea and Emergen-C and downing cold medicine that makes me do loopy things like get distracted mid-paragraph and wander into a monologue about zombies apropos of completely nothing (as you do)...

I think I'd better get out of this post while I still can. TL;DR: I have a cold. That's all I really meant to say. That, and thank you to [livejournal.com profile] brynspikess, whose v gift was a pleasant and welcome surprise last week.

I recorded six short podfics for the Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology II at [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon this year. Serious props are due to all the mods and betas involved in putting this thing together, and I strongly encourage all of you to set aside some time to really look at that cover art. It's amazing.

I haven't had the chance to listen to the anthology yet, but I'm so excited to see so many incredible readers voicing the work of so many amazing authors. I absolutely loved listening to last year's anthology, and I cannot wait to dive into this year's.

If you listen closely to the stories that I chose this year, you might determine: a) that I'm really into waffles, or; b) that I'm really into canons in which terrible, violent acts are inflicted on women. I guess both must be true. I love waffles and female friendship (and female more-than-friendship), but I'm also really interested in stories of survival and resilience. I love tough-minded women, and I love them all the more for their flaws, their hurts, and their humanity.

The stories are listed below. Links to the entire anthology in m4b and mp3 format are available through the main post (linked to above), as are links to all the individual mp3s. The links below are to the mp3s on box.com, where you can download or stream any of these podfics.

I'm running a race and these are the fics I read )

It was interesting to notice the pattern in my preferences exemplified by these six podfics. I'd never really thought much about exactly how much the theme of violence against women threads through so many of my favorite shows, books, and movies. Maybe, as Emily Prentiss might point out, it's just that violence against women is ubiquitous. Maybe it's not that I like stories in which women get hurt - maybe it's that there are so few out there in which women don't get hurt. Maybe that's exactly why I'm so in love with Leslie Knope. She's smart and funny and capable, and she pursues her goals with a dogged feminism and optimism that defies you not to root for her. Don't get me wrong, I like stories in which women survive and thrive, but there's something so refreshing about a woman like Leslie, whose success story doesn't have to include a chapter in which she overcomes violence and pain.

Anyway. These thoughts are half-formed, and need more time to gel. I'll write more about this later. I hope you like these six stories as much as I did, and I encourage you to check out the entire anthology. Awesome Ladies are awesome, indeed.

that's a tight present
