Another KISSES Fest has come and gone at [community profile] audiofemme. We had a good turnout this year - I haven't had a chance to listen to any of the other Makeouts yet, but I really enjoyed working on the Peck on the Lips compilation, and was really impressed with everyone's contributions. Also, [personal profile] yue_ix did a fantastic job with the cover art. Everyone's been talking about it, and rightly so.

I know I'm biased because I'm both a co-mod and a contributor, but I highly recommend checking out the fest. You can find all the Pecks (and the cover art!) here, and the Makeouts are posted directly to [community profile] audiofemme.

This year I recorded four Pecks and one Makeout. Streaming is available through the mp3 links for all of them. Here they are:

Reader's Note: I originally asked permission to record this fic over a year ago. Maybe even a year and a half? I remember thinking I was behind in recording it when I first started to work on it for KISSES Fest last year. I failed out about halfway through the recording, through absolutely no fault of the fic's, and started over from scratch this year. I'm really glad I finally finished it. I love this story to pieces. <3

Thanks again to all the authors for giving me permission to podfic their work! If you enjoy these podfics, please do leave feedback for the authors.

And thanks as well to [livejournal.com profile] cantarina1 for being such a lovely co-mod! <333

Oh my god you guys, [livejournal.com profile] manifesty made cover art for my podfic of The 80/20 Theory As  Applied to Cats on the Bed. You guys, it's beautiful. Just look at it.

[livejournal.com profile] manifesty does gorgeous work with cover art. The images zhe chooses and hir attention to light and color are amazing. I highly recommend looking through hir tumblr, Podfic Covers

I'm taking this excuse to repost this podfic with updated links (previously it was only available as an m4a - long, boring story that boils down to my general cluelessness). If you'd like this podfic in a more normal file format, and/or if you'd like a copy with some amazing cover art attached, the links are posted below!

I recorded six short podfics for the Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology II at [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon this year. Serious props are due to all the mods and betas involved in putting this thing together, and I strongly encourage all of you to set aside some time to really look at that cover art. It's amazing.

I haven't had the chance to listen to the anthology yet, but I'm so excited to see so many incredible readers voicing the work of so many amazing authors. I absolutely loved listening to last year's anthology, and I cannot wait to dive into this year's.

If you listen closely to the stories that I chose this year, you might determine: a) that I'm really into waffles, or; b) that I'm really into canons in which terrible, violent acts are inflicted on women. I guess both must be true. I love waffles and female friendship (and female more-than-friendship), but I'm also really interested in stories of survival and resilience. I love tough-minded women, and I love them all the more for their flaws, their hurts, and their humanity.

The stories are listed below. Links to the entire anthology in m4b and mp3 format are available through the main post (linked to above), as are links to all the individual mp3s. The links below are to the mp3s on box.com, where you can download or stream any of these podfics.

I'm running a race and these are the fics I read )

It was interesting to notice the pattern in my preferences exemplified by these six podfics. I'd never really thought much about exactly how much the theme of violence against women threads through so many of my favorite shows, books, and movies. Maybe, as Emily Prentiss might point out, it's just that violence against women is ubiquitous. Maybe it's not that I like stories in which women get hurt - maybe it's that there are so few out there in which women don't get hurt. Maybe that's exactly why I'm so in love with Leslie Knope. She's smart and funny and capable, and she pursues her goals with a dogged feminism and optimism that defies you not to root for her. Don't get me wrong, I like stories in which women survive and thrive, but there's something so refreshing about a woman like Leslie, whose success story doesn't have to include a chapter in which she overcomes violence and pain.

Anyway. These thoughts are half-formed, and need more time to gel. I'll write more about this later. I hope you like these six stories as much as I did, and I encourage you to check out the entire anthology. Awesome Ladies are awesome, indeed.

Troi and I

Jul. 7th, 2011 02:04 pm
nickelmountain: (Troi)
I just finished recording a short Troi/Selar podfic for A Peck on the Lips at [livejournal.com profile] podfic_project , and it's got me to thinking about Deanna Troi.

Granted, it doesn't take much to get me thinking about Star Trek. Star Trek is arguably my first fandom - my mother collected the Original Series line of authorized books, and I read most of them by the time I was 10. We watched all the movies as a family, I saw random episodes of TOS here and there (this was on an army base in Germany - AFN was the only English language station available, so there wasn't a lot of syndicated programming), and we watched TNG religiously. Wil Wheaton was my first celebrity crush. I was all about teh Wesley.

So, Deanna Troi. I've always had a hard time with her. She's had an undeniable influence on me - I am not training to be a therapist because of Deanna Troi, but I also can't pretend she's not a factor - but she's also always made me uncomfortable.

long post is long... )

Okay, so this one? Includes a Chekov line. With the accent. I am so pleased with myself right now.

This fic had some parentheticals that aren't completely ideal for podfic, and a visual joke which necessitated my first-ever Reader's Note at the end of the file, but it was an awesome, hilarious read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Also, keep this in mind as you listen: "There is no an /i/ in team."

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] manifesty made some gorgeous cover art for this podfic! Take a look here! Also, I acquainted myself with technology, and now you can download this podfic as an mp3 and m4b.

I have two papers to write, a presentation to prepare for, an eight hour workshop, and full shift at work this weekend, but I can't stop playing this vid. It has me completely entranced.

Help!

(Or, if not help, at least validate me. I posted it on facebook, but my facebook friends never click on anything I post that has anything to do with Star Trek. No matter how hard I try, I just can't convince them of the awesome.)

that's a tight present
