Laundry antics.

hannahEvery three months, I swap my sheet set. Living alone and showering daily means I don't need to change my sheets more than once every two weeks, and they get swapped out for the next set every three months. Four in total. It's not quite one-to-one with the seasons, but the sentiment's close enough.
In doing the laundry, I found out two of the machines were broken. Someone else was trying to use them, and without either of us knowing what was happening - the spin cycle's not working for the moment - I suggested she try seeing if it'd work to press the main "on" button again. It ran through another cycle without paying, stopping at the point it'd otherwise spin. I'd suspected as much, so I came prepared. I went to the laundry room with an extra roll of quarters because I know how much of a pain in the ass sopping laundry is, and any feelings of having even accidentally contributed to that to someone were ones I wanted to banish through direct action. Which was why I had the extra roll: I gave them to the person who'd been unfortunate enough to use the machine a second time, on my suggestion. She was agog, astonished, and after loading up a working machine, offered to give me back the $3.25 she hadn't used.
"Buy yourself a cup of coffee," I said.

I like keeping things to myself out of a sense of protectiveness towards those things, and to avoid conversations I can't ever convince myself are anything but insincere and indulgent, and because it feels like keeping things private is one of the few things I can have control over and exert some autonomy. Like a couple weeks ago when I went to DC without telling my family. My dad was more hurt by my being noncommittal when the subject of the weekend came up more than my leaving itself, but the point stands. But now I'm thinking: how do I compromise that.
One of the reasons I left without telling anyone beforehand was how hurt I was at the birthday dinner, and another one was that my brothers will jet off somewhere - Philadelphia, Buffalo - without any advance notice to anyone else. It's got me thinking about setting the precedent of saying I won't be attending Friday night dinner at least a week in advance without saying why, as a method to remind myself I don't have to share what I don't want to talk about and to hold it over them I'm much more thoughtful about it than they are. There's some spite involved in this, too. I can't deny that. But maybe it's a healthier version of it.

April Challenge 2026: Rain

What are Cheats?
Cheats are rewards that allow participants to manipulate their cards so that they can be finished more easily. There are 2 kinds of cheats: shifting squares and swapping out squares. Shifting squares allows participants to swap locations of two squares on their card. Swapping out cheats allow you to discard one of your prompts entirely from your card and replace it with a prompt of your choosing from the Prompt List.

By Mandalorian tradition, Jon Antilles owes him a life-debt, and Jaster is cunning enough not to let such a thing slip away.
It's meant to be an entirely political arrangement. It doesn't stay that way for long.
Reccer's Notes: Blackkat is a very prolific author who does an excellent job of taking medium-obscure Star Wars characters and doing really interesting things with them. Jaster Mereel is Jango Fett's adoptive father, and the Mandalore. (In canon, he was killed by Montross.) Jon Antilles is a Jedi who was abused by his Master growing up, but also learned some really obscure and difficult Force tricks from her, and spends his life wandering the galaxy alone as the Force wills. You don't have to know much more than that, as blackkat weaves a really interesting story about them, fleshing them both out deeply from what canon gives us.

Apr. 3rd, 2026 10:01 pmhannahUp late last night into this morning; it wasn't so bad walking a couple of blocks instead of trying inter-borough transit. If I'd had anything more than a couple of errands today, I'd have minded getting a late start in the morning. As I didn't, that part worked out, too.
I got a call from one of the group therapy places, who told me - to no surprise - that given the conversation we had, a more individualized approach would probably be better. I'm willing to give it some dubious benefit of the doubt, though I still bristle at the idea of a "career coach." Or any kind of coach, really, given that I don't play a sport. Getting coaching on anything besides that doesn't strike me as something useful.

Apr. 2nd, 2026 11:16 pmhannahMy parents' basement has a little section where there's an equal chance of finding recycling and reusables - say, cardboard boxes to be broken down and pulped and ceramic serving platters that simply don't fit into an apartment's aesthetics anymore. Among other things today, I found a small hammer. If hammers could be called cute, this one would qualify.
I nabbed it on the grounds that I recently had to chop up some hazelnuts for cake, and doing so would've been much easier with a little hammer than any other option. Chopping them up before roasting them increases surface area but raises risk of burning, and using a measuring cup to smash doesn't always get the desired results. As such: kitchen hammer. It wouldn't even be a unitasker, either, since I don't have a kitchen mallet for any of the tasks which call for such a device. But now, kitchen hammer to the rescue.
