nickelmountain: (one day my log will have something to sa)
This month has been kicking my ass. A big chunk of that is school/internship related, some of it is more personal/emotional, but what it comes down to here is me not being around much recently. Which, I know - practically every non-podfic post I make has to do with me not being around much. :/

But! I've been carving out some fannish time in bits and pieces (I believe the technical term is "self care"), and I thought I'd share what I've been into lately. (By lately, I mean within the last few months.)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine )

The Vorkosigan Saga )

Parks and Recreation )

Fringe )

Supernatural )

The Walking Dead )

Other stuff )

Man, fuck school. Who needs a career? Why do I want to "help people" anyway? I just want to sit around watching TV and movies, reading books and comic books, and living in a neverending field of fannish squee. WHO'S WITH ME?

I've noticed something about myself. When things are minimally stressful at school, I'm moderately active in fandom. I post new podfic, I read new fic, I comment on other people's posts. When things are moderately stressful at school, I drop off the face of the Internet. No posts, no comments, no reading, no nothing. Then, when things are extremely stressful at school, I can't stfu. I'm all, what's up, fandom? OH HAI, TWITTER!

Case in point, this post right here. I have a crushing amount of schoolwork to do this weekend, and all I want to do is talk fandom.

I need to focus on my coursework in November. I probably will be around Twitter (for stress relief, if nothing else), but I'm going to try hard not to indulge myself with LJ. I'm doing really well this semester, but I still have four three two one no! 4-10 page papers, four three two one no! exams, two one no (!!!) 50 minute presentations, one no! poster presentation, and one no!!!!! 40 page clinical competency exam (case presentation paper, complete w/ additional 18-20 pages of session transcripts) (which turned into 50 pages of presentation paper & 33 pages of transcript, and oh my god I'm so glad it's over) due by the end of the semester.

(I'm listing them all here so I can come back and cross things off. Which yeah, I know, defeats the whole No-LJ thing, but my rationale is that visiting LJ will be a reward for completing each item. Makes sense, right? Right?)

Okay, seriously, Nickel. Woman up and get to work.

ETA: Holy fuck, y'all! I'm done! (Yeah, until next semester, I know. But I'm not thinking about that right now. I'm done!!!)

I finished my second semester of grad school on Wednesday night, and today I'm heading out for a weekend of fangirling with [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat. We're going to eat some good food, watch some great shows, and SRSLY WORLD ENOUGH WITH THIS STUPID WEDDING CRAP.

*Ahem.* Sorry. Apparently I needed to get that out of my system.

My friends' band released their new album on Tuesday, and also announced that they'll be playing Lollapalooza again. Which is awesome for them, because they're incredible and deserve all their success, but it's more awesome for me. Because this means they'll be coming through Chicago this summer, and I'll get to see them. These are some of the nicest, best people I know, and seeing them always restores me somehow. I mean actually hanging out, but watching them play is also always satisfying, if surreal. They're fantastic, but watching the audience react to them is always strange for me.

Anyway. I guess I needed to get that out of my system, too. End of semester + my friends coming to Chicago + SPN renewed for a 7th season + fangirl weekend = one awesome fucking week, don't you think? Woo hoo!

Coffeecon

nickelmountain: (a lovely day)
I spent yesterday in Milwaukee, drinking coffee and talking fandom with [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat  and [livejournal.com profile] huzzlewhat . The day was made of awesome. It was my first meet-up with other fans - I went to one day of the Supernatural con in November, but I didn't actually talk to anyone. So cool to talk about fanfic out loud.

This meet-up was unlike other specialized interest meet-ups I've been to. Very occasionally, I'll find myself at a vegan meet-up. The food is generally pretty awesome, but the people talk about nothing but being vegan. The politics of it, especially. It gets old. I've been vegan almost half my life - it's a fact of my existence, not an interest. I have my reasons, but I don't feel compelled to go over them again and again.

Fandom...is totally different. I really want to talk about fannish stuff, pretty much all the time, and nickelhusband has been my solitary, long-suffering audience up until now. Also, [livejournal.com profile] nwhepcat and [livejournal.com profile] huzzlewhat are cool as hell. You can tell anyone I said so.

I promised another podfic. It will happen. I'm in the preliminary stages now.

But first - eight hours at work!

that's a tight present
